14 Months

Tuesday, August 16, 2011

This past Friday, on Cash's 14 month birthday, he had surgery to get ear tubes. We spent the morning at an outpatient surgery clinic where Cash was put under anesthesia and then went into an extremely quick (as in 5 minutes quick) procedure where they inserted tiny plastic tubes into his eustacian canals which will lengthen them and make it so that he doesn't get recurrent ear infections. He did great and we are hoping that the surgery will help him to not be constantly sick and in pain.

So 14 months marked what we hope is a turning of the page on sickness into a new phase of health in Cash's young life. It also marked another milestone since the evening before his surgery he started walking! And not just a couple of steps here and there but full on, crossing the room walking. We were lucky that we were on Skype with Mollie and Old Grand-Dad at the time so they got to see the first big steps. While he's not motoring around just yet, he seems to become more confident by the day and it will probably be no time before he is running around the house and driving us crazy.

What else is Cash doing? He's doing a lot of pointing, especially towards our neighbors house and their dogs, his wagon, and the swing in our backyard. He's also starting to sound out a few more words - the other night while reading we worked on "cow" and "cat". They kind of sounded the same, but it was a valiant effort. Cash is still a little guy and all of 20 pounds and he has a head full of hair. He started at a new day care this month that is two minutes away from home and has been christened with the nickname of "little Matthew McConaghey" because of his curly golden locks. Ross and I think it is fitting. He's still adjusting to the new day care - we have crying sessions each morning when we arrive and as Mommy leaves but I'm told they are getting shorter each day and when I pick him up he looks like he's having a great time. Overall we are happy that he is closer and that the commute is much quicker so we get more time in the morning and evening with him.

Swimming lessons ended with a bang last week, and by bang I mean that Cash pooped in the pool and cleared it out for the rest of the day. Even though we would probably be ok for Cash to go back for the last couple of lessons with cotton in his ears, I've decided that we'll probably just cut our losses until next year and start attending music hour at the Children's Museum instead. Much less chance of a major poo-mergency happening and also much more of a chance for Mommy to make some friends instead of getting dirty looks.

Overall Cash is doing great at 14 months and having lots of fun. Can't wait to see what month 15 brings!
